Curry and Conversations: A Step-by-Step Guide to Starting Your Dream Venture
Hey there, lovely people!
Welcome aboard! First and foremost, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to each one of you for being here. After years of ghostwriting blogs for clients, I've finally decided to embark on my own blogging journey, and I couldn't be more thrilled to have you join me.
Let's kick off this exciting adventure with a dose of encouragement. You see, taking that first step can feel daunting – whether it's starting a blog, launching a business, or chasing after your dreams. It may seem crazy, and truth be told, it probably is. But the mere fact that you're contemplating it is proof that you're capable of achieving it. I know those nagging doubts all too well – the fear of failure, the worry about making ends meet, the what-ifs that plague your mind. But here's the deal: we're leaving those negative thoughts at the door. And if they persist, well, I'm just a phone call away. I'll gladly share ten reasons why you CAN do this, and we'll map out a plan together.
You know, there's something magical about connecting with clients and diving into their dreams and aspirations. It's in those moments that my passion truly ignites, and the wheels of marketing and design start spinning. Trust me when I say that starting is often the hardest part of the entrepreneurial journey. Even if you're juggling a 9-5 gig, you can kickstart your venture as a side hustle. Fun fact: Crane Design Co was born in my corporate office while I was working a 9-5. I cherished that job, but I was also sowing the seeds for my future career and passion project. So, let me reiterate: just start.
But how, you ask? Beyond navigating the dreaded taxes and paperwork (which, let's be honest, I detest and promptly outsource!), I'm here to guide you through the marketing and graphic design side of things – the very same path I've tread and helped countless others traverse.
Step one: think of a name. This part can be a doozy! My sister and I once spent hours brainstorming names for our dream venture – a women's clothing/knit/coffee/flower shop (admit it, it's every girl's fantasy!). We sat in my mom’s room for EVER bouncing names around. Like 4 hours. We said them out loud, shouted them to each other and even said phrases like; "Hey I'm going _____, wanna come?". Finally after hours in our think tank (mom's room) we landed on it and we both KNEW IT. It was like, ok that's it. Sometimes the perfect name comes to you in a flash, while other times, you're stuck deciding between a handful of options. Keep a running list in your phone – you never know when inspiration will strike.
Next up: finding a graphic designer. Lucky for you, I happen to be one! But in all seriousness, I get it – the prospect of finding the right designer can be intimidating. "What even is a graphic designer?! Can I afford one? Can't I just DIY it on Canva?" These are all valid questions, and trust me, I've heard them all. Graphic designers come in all shapes, sizes, and price points. As for me, I like to think I offer fair rates. But if my prices don't align with your budget, I've got connections – I can hook you up with a colleague who offers more affordable packages.
In your free consultation call with a designer, be sure to ask for examples of their work, their pricing, and their timeframe. Communication is key – after all, you're entrusting them with your vision. For my part, I love hearing all about your business – the origins of your idea, your why, your goals. Where will this logo be used? A website, a billboard, a storefront sign? We'll dive into the nitty-gritty of design – your brand's aesthetic, preferred colors, fonts, and any other specifics you have in mind.
Fast forward through a few rounds of concepts and voila – you've got yourself a shiny new logo, or better yet, an entire brand package complete with multiple logos, a color palette, font selection, and design elements.
Step three: embrace social media. At the very least, create an Instagram account (it integrates seamlessly with websites) and, if your clientele frequents Facebook, consider setting up a page there too. Take the time to set up your profiles thoughtfully, or better yet, hire a Social Media Manager (I happen to offer this service too, and I've got some talented friends I can refer you to). Keep your brand's vibe consistent across all platforms – trust me, it makes a world of difference.
Step four: invest in a website. Sure, you could probably get by without one, but let me tell you – it's a game-changer. Your website serves as a digital extension of your brand, housing all your pertinent information in one convenient location. Find yourself a website designer (hey, guess what – that's me again!). I like to think my rates are reasonable, but here's the thing: you don't want to skimp on your website. Trust me, I've seen the fallout from those DIY disasters. Make a list of everything you want included on your site – about, services, blog, shop, testimonials, you name it. And don't forget your call-to-action – how do you want people to engage with your business? Websites can be a bit of a back-and-forth process, so the sooner you get started, the better.
Step five: think print. Business cards, brochures, flyers – these tangible materials are an extension of your brand. Invest in quality design (you guessed it – I'm your gal!) that reflects your brand's aesthetic. Remember, branding isn't just about looking pretty – it's about leaving a lasting impression. I've had the privilege of designing over 75 logos, and while some businesses have thrived and become immensely successful, others faltered within days or months. However, the common thread among the successful ones is clear: they didn't cut corners when it came to branding, websites, and print materials. It's worth noting that every client I've created a brochure for is still in business – make of that what you will.
Last but certainly not least: build your email list. Your website is the perfect place to collect those precious email addresses. After all, these folks are already interested in what you have to offer – why not seize the opportunity? If you're pressed for time to pen your blog, consider hiring a Ghostwriter – I offer this service too ;). A ghostwriter crafts compelling narratives that resonate with your audience, making your content engaging and inbox-worthy. Let me be clear: BLOGGING IS BACK, BABY! Your audience craves authentic, conversational content – it's like chatting with a friend. Plus, frequent blog posts boost your SEO score, ensuring your content reaches a wider audience.
So there you have it – six steps to kickstarting your dream venture. But remember, Rome wasn't built in a day. It's okay to stumble along the way, to mess up, to feel overwhelmed. Just keep going. Start small, and build every single day. You're incredibly fortunate to have this 'big idea' – not everyone gets that gift. Embrace it, nurture it, and above all, just start. Because I believe in you, and I can't wait to see where this journey takes you.
Oh, and in case you're wondering, this blog was fueled by Paleo Butter Chicken and Peach Tea, with a sprinkle of creative inspiration. You never know when the next big idea will strike, so stay alert, soak it all in, and give me a call when it does!
Cheers to new beginnings!
