Celebrating Mompreneurs: A Mother's Day Chat with Inspiring Women

Good morning and Happy Mother's Day from the Crane Design Company! Today, I'm excited to introduce you to four remarkable women who embody the essence of motherhood and entrepreneurship. Each of them navigates the beautiful chaos of motherhood while excelling in their respective businesses: Ashley Brandt of Ash + Co. Salon, Ainsley Toal of the Steel Magnolia Bar, Paige Thompson of Clarity Beauty Pros, and Alexis Prickett of Alexis Caroline Photography.

These inspiring women navigate the complexities of running successful businesses while nurturing their families with grace and determination. Their stories are a testament to the power of passion, resilience, and unwavering love. As a fellow mompreneur, I'm honored to share their journeys with you, and I hope their experiences inspire you as much as they inspire me. Happy Mother's Day to all the amazing moms out there—you are the true superheroes!

Introducing Ashley Brandt, the dynamic owner of the charming Ash & Co Salon nestled in Cumming, Georgia. Ashley is not only a powerhouse entrepreneur overseeing a team of 10 talented stylists, but her most cherished role is that of a devoted mom to her two beautiful daughters. Let’s learn a few things from Ashley!

1. Juggling salon ownership and motherhood is no small feat. What strategies have helped you maintain a harmonious balance?

Maintaining balance between salon ownership and motherhood is definitely challenging, but I’ve found a few strategies that help. Firstly, having a strong support system of family, friends, and coworkers who can step in when needed has been invaluable. They understand the demands of both roles and are always there to lend a hand or offer a listening ear.

Additionally, I’ve learned to prioritize and delegate tasks effectively. Not everything needs to be done by me, and trusting others to handle certain responsibilities allows me to focus on what truly needs my attention at any given moment.

But let’s be real, just when I think I’ve found that perfect point balance, life throws a curveball. Whether it’s a sick child, unexpected schedule changes, or taking on new challenges like coaching cheerleading, there’s always something keeping me on my toes.

I take a lot of walks, or try to, listen to a lot of podcasts and motivational books, and there are some days I genuinely pray to God for the energy to do it all again lol, and He always comes through… on the other hand vacations are definitely a lifesaver too! Taking time to recharge and disconnect is essential for both my mental and physical well-being. It’s during these breaks that I can truly unwind and come back feeling refreshed and ready to tackle whatever comes my way next.

2. Is there a particular haircare service or treatment from Ash + Co Salon that you think would be a treat for fellow busy moms?

A haircare service at Ash + Co Salon that would be a treat for fellow busy moms is our scalp and hair treatment followed by a customized haircut and blowout. It's an opportunity to relax and refresh while enjoying some much-deserved "me time,” and definitely schedule yourself an appointment for custom color or balayage.. Fresh color never disappoints!

Additionally, moms can enhance their pampering experience by indulging in a facial and spray tan at Zo Aesthetics for a glowing finish. It's important for moms to prioritize self-care and treat themselves to moments of relaxation amidst the demands of motherhood.

There is nothing more rewarding than being a mama, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t come with challenges, and sometimes we just need to checkout… or pretend like we are anyways lol!

3. What advice would you give women with younger children who are trying to manage motherhood and building their own business?

Managing motherhood while building a business is undoubtedly challenging, but here are some tips:

  1. Set Clear Boundaries: Designate specific times for work and family, and stick to them as much as possible to maintain balance.

  2. Prioritize Tasks: Focus on high-impact tasks that move your business forward, and delegate or outsource less critical tasks when possible.

  3. Flexibility: Embrace flexibility in your schedule to accommodate unexpected childcare needs or other family responsibilities.

  4. Self-Care: Make time for self-care to recharge and avoid burnout. Remember, taking care of yourself enables you to better care for your children and your business.

  5. Network and Support: Connect with other entrepreneurial mothers for support, advice, and networking opportunities. You're not alone in this journey.

  6. Set Realistic Goals: Be realistic about what you can achieve in a given timeframe and celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small.

  7. Stay Organized: Use tools like calendars, to-do lists, and project management software to stay organized and maximize productivity.

  8. Communicate: Communicate openly with your family about your business goals and the support you need from them.

  9. Embrace Imperfection: Accept that there will be days when things don't go as planned, and that's okay. Give yourself grace and keep moving forward.

  10. Celebrate Successes: Celebrate milestones and successes, both in your business and in your family life. Recognize and appreciate the progress you're making.

Admittedly I  am not great at some of these! It's completely normal to struggle with balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship, and nobody expects you to be perfect at it from the get-go. Remember, it's a learning process, and it's okay to make mistakes along the way. The important thing is to keep trying, be kind to yourself, and seek support when you need it. You've got this!

4. How do you manage feelings of mom guilt or the pressure to excel in both your family and business roles?

Managing feelings of mom guilt and the pressure to excel in both family and business roles can be challenging, but it's important to remember that you're doing the best you can. Setting realistic expectations, prioritizing tasks, and being kind to yourself are key. Also, seeking support from loved ones, delegating tasks when possible, and taking breaks to recharge can help alleviate some of the pressure. Remember, it's okay to ask for help and to not strive for perfection in every aspect of your life.

Ashley Brandt and her beautiful daughters!

Allow me to introduce Ainsley Toal, the visionary behind Steel Magnolia Bar, headquartered in Dawsonville, Georgia, yet ready to travel anywhere to bring the magic to your event! Steel Magnolia is not just a mobile bar; it's an experience crafted to perfection, ensuring unforgettable memories for you and your guests. Ainsley, a mother of three, exudes grace in handling both her business and motherhood.

1. What advice would you give women with younger children who are trying to manage motherhood and building their own business?

During the initial phase of renovating my horse trailer, my 6 year old son Brooks was very enthusiastic about helping me paint. He used to ask me every week when he could start painting. Eventually, he was able to and  while we were working on it, he looked at me and said, "Mom, I am so proud of you!" *Queue the tears* It was a sweet reminder that we need to strive to be the best versions of ourselves and also for our children because they are watching us grow and evolve. So, I encourage you to be bold and reach for the stars, even when you think you can't.

2. Balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship can be challenging. How do you manage to excel in both realms?

As the saying goes, 'It takes a village.' I am grateful to have a tremendous support system consisting of both my own family and my husband's family. Running my business would be nearly impossible without their help - whether it's watching my kids during an event, cooking a meal, or simply praying for me when I am feeling overwhelmed. I am deeply appreciative of each of them and the important roles they play in my journey towards success.

3. When mom guilt creeps in, how do you manage and overcome these feelings?

Mom guilt is a genuine feeling that I believe will never completely go away. Although I am exhausted, after my kids have gone to bed, I typically handle all the boring behind the scenes stuff. It's the only time I have to myself where I'm not taking away attention from my kids or being disturbed by the commotion of my daily life. This is where the extra strong coffee comes in handy.

4. How has the journey of being a mompreneur enriched your life with new opportunities, creativity, and a sense of accomplishment that inspires you to pursue your business goals further?

When I think about my younger years and even now, being a entrepruner never once crossed my mind. It's still somewhat surreal to me. I had no idea about the intricacies of running a business or renovating a horse trailer.  I just took the first step, and learned along the way. In fact, I am still learning. Despite having no clear roadmap on how to run this business, I feel my most confident and capable self. I am proud of the woman I've become and the opportunities that have come my way since starting The Steel Magnolia.

Let me introduce you to Paige Thompson, the Owner of Clarity Beauty Pros in Dawsonville, Georgia. I've admired Paige for years for her incredible ability to juggle being a mom to three kids while running a growing business. Let’s learn a thing or two from Paige!

1. What advice would you give women with younger children who are trying to manage motherhood and building their own business?

The biggest piece of advice I can offer moms to littles that are trying to build your own business is to not be so hard on yourself. Having goals and pushing yourself to accomplish more is wonderful, but don’t overdo it. There is a season for everything in this life, and those early years with babies and toddlers seem to fly by entirely too quickly. Give yourself a structured work schedule with “office hours” and commit to it. I’ve found when I block time for work (opposed to being more fluid with my work and personal schedule) I accomplish much more and feel better putting work away completely when those hours are over. Also keep in mind that your schedule will get rearranged and that should be expected! Toddlers stop napping, your kids will get sick, and you need a vacation somewhere in the mix of all the chaos. Don’t stress when it’s time to re-evaluate or reschedule from time-to-time.

2. How do you prioritize self-care and wellness as a busy mompreneur, and what advice do you have for others striving to find balance?

Being a mom can be mentally, emotionally, and physically taxing, for sure. But I also see it as the most honorable calling we can have in this life! When it comes to your personal wellness and self care I believe it is important not to fall into the social media trap of thinking you need to do every beauty, fitness, or wellness routine on the market to “have it all together.”  Do what resonates with your goals and lifestyle, and feels healthiest to you. My hope would be that you can lay your head down on your pillow every night feeling a sense of joy and accomplishment, knowing you touch many peoples’ lives and have cared for yourself along the way. To help grasp this sense of peace and wellbeing, try different forms of self care until something sticks! Routine exercise, daily quiet time to read, and weekly selfcare nights with a bubble bath and face mask are some of my favorites. Taking little moments each day add up to a bigger sense of ease and confidence in motherhood.

3. Is there a particular skincare product or treatment from Clarity Skin Solutions that you think would benefit fellow moms looking to pamper themselves?

As a mom, ANY service at Clarity will benefit you! Mamas give so much to others, it is crucial that we fill our glass back up, too. The rejuvenation of being pampered with a facial does just as much for your mental health as your skin health. And the instant confident boost a lash service or sunless tan can give you is unparalleled! My professional advice is to take some time to care for yourself routinely- whether that is daily, weekly, or monthly. You will thank yourself for it!

4. You handle being a mom and a business owner with such grace. Can you share a challenge you faced as a mompreneur and how you overcame it?

The biggest challenge I’ve faced as a mompreneur is trying to find balance in all the roles I’m responsible for. The reality is there is no such thing as a perfect balance. Different roles will take precedence during different seasons of life. Life can’t be planned out perfectly with kids, and that’s really part of the beauty of being a mom. No two days are ever the same! I have found when I prioritize with my heart, I am more successful and everyone is happier at the end of the day.

And finally, I'm thrilled to introduce Alexis Caroline Prickett, a talented local photographer, dedicated educator, and loving mom to 2 adorable kiddos! Alexis effortlessly balances her multiple roles and makes it all seem so effortless. She's truly a shining example of grace and determination.

1. What advice would you give women with younger children who are trying to manage motherhood and building their own business?

If I could give other women with younger children advice while managing motherhood and building their own business, it would be to not stress. It will get done, and you kiddo will be loved on. Some days are heavier than others, and that is okay. The fun thing about owning your own business is that, you can give yourself grace. I know days can seem overwhelming at times, but what’s meant for you won’t pass you. At least that’s always what I tell myself, when I’m feeling down that business is not as busy as I’d like or I’m busier than I’d like.

2.During demanding work periods, how do you carve out time for self-care to recharge and stay inspired?

During demanding work periods, I make sure to find quiet time early in the morning to recharge my mind to stay focused with work, but have time to enjoy my family as well. I believe an iced coffee and Jesus music at 6am changes my mood for the whole day ahead.

 3. How do you handle moments of mom guilt while juggling the responsibilities of business ownership and motherhood?

The delicate balancing act between professional ambitions and the responsibilities of raising littles often leads to what's commonly known as "mum guilt." I try my best to understand that my feelings are valid, yet it is okay to also follow my passions with certain standards. I set Realistic Expectations.  I know that perfection is unattainable. I can provide more quality time with my kiddos by setting work times around their schedules.

4. Can you recommend a photography session from Alexis Caroline Photography for moms cherishing precious moments?

I would 100% recommend a session for moms. It is the PERFECT Mother’s Day gift actually! I offer gift certificates for any reason, and mommy and me sessions are the perfect opportunity to capture memories that’ll last a lifetime. The reason photography has become my passion is due to the way I can feel emotions in photos, and yet we may not even reason the love surrounding us until we look back on photos on special days.

Alexis and her beautiful family!

As we celebrate Mother's Day, let's raise a toast to all the incredible moms out there, honoring their strength, resilience, and boundless love. Here's to you, and here's to us—cheers! <3

Megan Crane
