Keep Learning, Keep Growing: The Secret to Long-Term Success
Hey Friend!
I hope you’re having an amazing week and checking all the things off your to-do list!
Today, I want to chat with you about getting started and landing your first few gigs.
When I first started out, my first few jobs came through family and friend referrals. They weren’t high-paying, but I didn’t care! I was grateful for any opportunity. I got to work. My mindset from the VERY beginning was to do the absolute BEST job I could—no matter the client, no matter the pay.
I wanted my reputation to be built on being a good listener (starting with an intentional consultation call), a hard worker, and someone who responded quickly and professionally. More importantly, I wanted to be known for delivering top-notch results.
To stand out, I made sure to include real-life mock-ups, over-delivered on logo concepts, and just went above and beyond in general. I wanted people to say, “Dang, this girl is GOOD.” And that effort paid off. The habits I built in those early days are still the foundation of my business today. I constantly look for ways to over-deliver and enhance my client experience.
I recently talked to my sister about this. She’s a seasoned hairstylist trained by some of the best in the industry. When she was starting out, she was like a SPONGE—always asking for constructive criticism, soaking up every lesson, and finding ways to improve. That’s passion. When you can set aside your pride and ask for help, when you are constantly pulled to learn and grow, THAT is passion. And you need to be passionate about your business.
Also, I want to make note that this is not something that ends. You don’t just learn all the lessons you need and now you’re good. You’ve made it, no more need to learn. Sorry, but that isn’t how this works! You need to CONTINUE to learn all throughout your business ownership journey. Try new services, invest in education, and keep that passion alive, baby!
My Advice to You as You’re Starting Out:
Invest in education. Whether it’s an online course, a mentor, or simply being brave enough to ask for feedback, never stop learning.
Treat those low-paying first jobs like they’re the big ones. Because they are. They shape your reputation, and reputation is everything.
Study your competition. See what they’re doing to enhance their customer experience, keep an open mind, and try new things to improve your service or product.
I hope this is helpful for you. I’ve been thinking about it for days, realizing that no matter the industry or product, this lesson is valuable for anyone starting out. Do the absolute best you can, so people have no choice but to refer you to their friends and family.
With so much love and support,
Megan
